CC+ firmware release 215 offers Random Patch Generator, Support for Parameter feedback for 'knob boxes' and more

David Clarke [21030085++]

Happy Birthday to the CC+.

The first CC+ orders were placed in June, 2006. Now five years later, these boards are still being produced and we're still adding features suggested by CC+ users.

The newly released version of firmware (215) adds the following items:

  • Support for transmission of Monophonic (Channel) Pressure via MIDI
  • Program 0 SYSEX dump via [Set Split 20]
  • Random Patch Generation with [Set Split 38]
  • 'MIDI CC Data Request' SYSEX command

As well, operation has been updated such that a Program 0 SYSEX receive will automatically redefine the main and link instruments according to the new program.

Mono Pressure

[Set Split 36] + P16 (MIDI Pressure Mode) now gives users a choice as to whether they would like to transmit MIDI pressure as Polyphonic/Key pressure messages or Monophonic/Channel Pressure messages.

  • Setting P16 to "Pol" selects Polyphonic/Key pressure messages.
  • Setting P16 to "Chnl" selects Monophonic/Channel Pressure messages.

Program 0 SYSEX Dump/Receive

Pressing [Set Split 20] sends the current program over MIDI as a single program 0 SYSEX message.

Sending the 'program 0' SYSEX message back to the Chroma will make that patch the currently sounding one.

Together, these features can be used to allow a user to create a specific patch they like, send it to a sequencer for storage - and then to have the sequencer download just that the patch to the Chroma, so that you can always ensure that a sequence is playing exactly the patch of interest.

Random Patch Generator

Pressing [Set Split 38] creates a random patch. A new random patch is created each time that key combination is pressed.

CC Parameter Dump Request

Sending the following SYSEX string to the Chroma will prompt the Chroma to dump all parameters of its current program via MIDI.

F0 08 00 4B 59 00 38 F7

This command is provided to allow parameter feedback for such editors as the BCR2000. Specifically - by programming this string into the 'Data Request' feature of the box, the current parameter state can be echoed back to the encoder rings.

Such a feature could also be used with other editors that support similar functionality.

Further information on these features is available on-line via the CC+ User's Manual and in the CC+'s Firmware page.

Please continue to raise new feature ideas here for discussion - and if there are items that users agree would be good to add, we'll certainly consider adding them.

Thank you for your continued interest.

(NOTE: CC+ units currently being built will ship with firmware version 215 pre-installed).

Matrix [21030220]

Happy Birthday! Thanks for making it possible. Nothing has opened more doors on the Chroma than the CC+ upgrade in my opinion.

Dave Bradley [16330135]

Dang! I gotta get my Chroma functioning again. Well done, gents.

Werner Schöenenberger [21010114]

Congrats and thank you both for making this possible. It keeps the synth alive and is a HUGE contribution to all of us analog nerds (c:

Marais

Can't wait to try the random patch generator. Thank you David and Sandro!!

Yes, how do we get the update if we do not have a chip burner handy?

A future idea: Could the Arpeggiator be expanded to do more things like more modes and patterns, could a simple idea or sketch sequencer be added like in the Polaris or Pro one. Also, could a way to latch the arpeggiator be added?

Randel Osborne [21030467]

I've discovered that the sustain pedal latches the arpeggiator, as does playing more than 128 (I think) notes.

David Clarke [21030085++]

How will I get the new firmware for my older CC+? …

I need to update soon and with these added features it becomes even more interesting. What's the easiest way? …

Yes, how do we get the update if we do not have a chip burner handy? …

The nice thing about the update is that only a single chip change is needed.

Simply remove U2 from the CC+ board and install a new EPROM in the U2 location with the firmware version you're interested in.

If you're stuck and can't find anyone to program a chip for you, I can always offer to help by programming a chip here and sending it along. In most cases though, it will be easiest/cheapest/fastest to go to your favourite electronics hobbyist and have them burn the EPROM for you.

I'm also sure that other folks on the list (who may be geographically close) would also be willing to help by programming a PROM too.

David Clarke [21030085++]

I've discovered that the sustain pedal latches the arpeggiator, as does playing more than 128 (I think) notes.

As excerpted from the Rhodes Chroma Programming Manual (Control Parameters):

"... Notes will be remembered as long as the sustain footswitch or a key is held, or as long as the latch switch is depressed..."

If you want it to latch the arpeggiator without pressing a pedal all the time, remember that the Chroma looks at the state of its pedals at boot-up, and treats the 'at boot up state' as the normal state.

So, if you power up the Chroma with the Sustain footswitch depressed (for instance) and then let it go after the Chroma starts, the keyboard will default to sustaining (holding) and will automatically latch the sequencer, if used.

(If you want to 'clear' the latch, just tap the Latch pedal - and you can try a different sequence).

Doug Terrebonne [21030114]

Have you considered going to MIDI sysex updatable flash ROM on future CC+s? Other synth upgrades I have like the JP-6 Europa have this and it makes updating a breeze.

David Clarke [21030085++]

Have you considered going to MIDI sysex updatable flash ROM on future CC+s? Other synth upgrades I have like the JP-6 Europa have this and it makes updating a breeze.

No. Not really.

While the technology is available, the effort to implement wouldn't be justified when compared to the benefit.

Also, if it was done, you couldn't just send a SYSEX file because (just like Europa) there isn't enough memory free to allow a full firmware image to be downloaded to the card, then to program that image into a memory device. Instead (like Europa), a special programming utility would be needed.

It also makes more sense for Europa to require the in-place updates too, because a) that image is copy protected (and can't just be burned into a blank chip) and b) not as many people have programmers that support programming the flash inside a processor chip vs. the flash in a generic EPROM.

A single chip swap seemed to be the cheapest, easiest and most straightforward method for most users.

Doug Terrebonne [21030114]

Thanks for the explanation. Yeah I forgot the Europa isn't a sysex file but my point was the user is able to download a file and just connect their synth to their PC and update the ROM vs. having to buy an EPROM programmer on hunt down someone with one and have them removing and inserting chips with the possibility of bending pins, etc. Of course having been one of the Europa beta testers I can say it was certainly very conventient updating it over MIDI cables from the PC but CC+ seems very stable and mature without the need for frequent updating. :)

Rhodes chroma for sale

Kinetic Sound Prism

Just to let you guys know i have a rhodes Chroma for sale in the uk at a price relative to the last 3 or 4 ebay prices or the 'going rate '.

World shipping is possible (it's how i recieved it)

Please contact me direct if you are looking for one anytime in the future.

The Chroma is fully working with midi and some work done on it over the last year and servicing.

Its the most regrettable sale of my life but needs must right now.

The Chroma is very stable and in really nice cosmetic shape. It's a good one !

Item #320707815855, USD$9.99, ends July 1. This is the "Finally, someone is prepared to do for the synthesizer what Rhodes did for the piano" ad from Keyboard Magazine, August 1982. From the description: "Advertisements can be framed and are found in all your trendy restaurants, Hard Rock Cafe etc. This ad will look great in your home, office or studio." Cool!

Community work on Behringer BCR2000 'standard' setup for site?

David Clarke [21030085++]

I recently bought a BCR2000 as a cheap way to test out the "Data Request" functionality added to the CC+ 215 firmware.

I honestly expected that the BCR2000 wasn't going to be that useful (in general) - but I was pleasantly surprised by just how well it let me manipulate patches into something good.

I was also pleased with how well the Data Request capability let me see the 'current value' of all the settings before changing them. Not only did that feature let me see the value - but it also ensured you avoid the 'jump' in the parameter value when you first go to turn the knob - it always starts out where the Chroma left it.

While I was happy with how well it worked, there were some struggles to get to a nice, working point.

The data on the Chromatrol page was originally my starting point (like others on the list) - but that's not a necessarily everything you'd need to know to get going.

Even for the data that's there, to really better understand the mapping, you'd want to refer back to the knob/button mapping information patch mapping in the February 2010 ChromaTalk thread Chromatrol for Behringer B-Control.

As well, while the SYSEX files do indicate they're for 'A' and 'B' patches, at present both on the site appear to be duplicates of one another (for Patch A).

The desired parameter mapping requires access to all the Chroma parameters - and that requires the CC+ parameters be set appropriately.

There may also be some alternate layouts that would be more useful too (e.g., it it really expected you'd want/need to have the "Output" control in a prime editing location? Ditto for the "Footswitch" settings?)

Back in 2010, Luca Sasdelli [21010226] had noted he made some updates, and had some updated files (see Re: Chromatrol for Behringer B-Control, May) - but those aren't on the site yet (although Luca's recently provided them for consideration).

It would be nice to capture all the BCR2000 data all in one place.

A quick show of hands:

  1. How many folks here currently have a BCR2000?
  2. Would you be willing/able to help work collaboratively to get to:
    • some sort of nominal default set of files that would be good to have on the site?
    • a set of 'how to' instructions so that new users can get up and going quickly?

Some of my own personal thoughts:

  • I prefer the Mod Depth parameters (except for the two Volume Ampl Mod values that go from 0-15) to be encoded via the "PAN" LED pattern, as that way it appears to more accurately reflect the nature of the parameter.
  • Instead of having all encoder LEDs go 'off' when the value chosen is '0', I prefer to have at least one dot always illuminated on any 'active' knob. That way you can always quickly tell which knobs are active (do something) and which ones aren't used at all.
  • Any parameters that are different as you go to select (e.g., Mod Select) - should be displayed as a single dot on the encoder ring.
  • Any parameters that are incrementing values of the same thing (e.g., Resonance, Attack, Delay, etc.) should be displayed as a 'bar' pattern on the encoder ring.
  • The 'data request' SYSEX should be encoded into both the A and B patch, as well as into the GLOBAL data in the BCR2000. That way the data is automatically updated to reflect the current state when you swap between A and B parameters AND you can always manually request and update with the EDIT | LEARN button sequence.
  • BC Manager software would be the preferred software for us to use to work on getting the settings to something we'd all like.

Chris Smalt [21010280+]

A quick show of hands:

  1. How many folks here currently have a BCR2000?

No, but I'm very happy with your personal thoughts about the subject. Really well thought out.

Werner Schöenenberger [21010114]

I do not work with a BCR2000 either...

Marais

Mine has gone on to another home after my Enabler arrived, but if I can offer any insight please do not hesitate to ask or mind I hope.

This would be a very good concept for the iPad editors IMO as well is possible which still confuses the hell out of someone like me stuck in 1985 : )

Jesper Ödemark [21010135]

  1. How many folks here currently have a BCR2000?

Doepfer Drehbank with customized Chroma settings here, but I'm always interested in every progress concerning the Chroma and how to use it.

My house-tech will solve my eprom issue BTW. :D

Doug Terrebonne [21030114]

I have a BCR2000 although I use it basically a dedicated Juno-2 editor...

Frank McGing [21010198]

I haven't got a BCR but would be interested in getting one for my Chroma. I've also been thinking about the idea of 2 or 3 of them linked - has anyone tried that? That would be an extremely inexpensive way to have a 96 knob controller... :-)

Michael Grossman [21030350]

I have a BCR2000 and would be willing to help.

Claes von Heijne[16330008]

I have the BCR2000, I loaded the BCR2000P1EditA.syx and BCR2000P1EditB.syx [see Re: MIDI Controllers, April 2007], but it did not work as easy as I hoped, maybe I need to update the CC+ with new firmware? I have both Chroma and Expander and want both to bes tweakable together simulataneously while playing from the Chroma. Touring, teaching and studying Bach, too little time...

David Clarke [21030085++]

... I loaded the BCR2000P1EditA.syx and BCR2000P1EditB.syx, but it did not work as easy as I hoped...

Claes - it is exactly this sort of experience that is the reason behind some suggested work to update the information on the site, to help make it more straightforward for the users to have a good starting point.

For those who have already replied - thank you. I'll plan to follow up with some further thoughts to list in the not too distant future.

See Behringer BCR2000 Set Up; and Setup Guide for Behringer BCR2000 + Chroma, August 2011.

a nice find today

Brian McCully [21030361]

While spring cleaning I was looking through a box of old speaker cables - the kind that are so old that their outer covering is sticky (kind of like the Chroma case rot) and at the very bottom of the box I found my cassette interface cable. And it wasn't sticky. I was glad because I found the deck and data cassettes a few months ago but the cable had somehow gone missing, separated from the ("for the TRS-80") deck. I don't know where the 110V power cable is for the deck (or if I ever had one), but I luckily had some C batteries handy, threw them in the deck (very happy to discover it empty inside, i.e. no rotten batteries on the inside) and it still works! Now I need to see whether it still interfaces with the Chroma, but that's for later this week hopefully, after the spring cleaning gets tackled a bit more...

I also found a packet of Chroma Cult docs - one was a letter of contributors names for the data banks - is this of interest? (I hope I can find it again if it is...)

Chris Borman [21030194+]

I have two of those cables, two cassette decks and a bunch of tapes. Neither of the decks work. I have a similar aged Weather Report audio tape I made that won't play. Maybe my Chroma Data tapes will work too? Can I send you my tapes to take a look? Just feed any good output into your PC to save to a wave file. If there is anything unique, send to Chris R to put up on the website. I believe at least one tape I have is unique.

Chris Ryan [21030691]

Definitely of interest. I've been looking for this for years: see Information Wanted.

On a somewhat related note, I had put together some code a while back analyze/decode Chroma patches in audio format.

If anyone believes they have unique patches that perhaps won't load from cassette any longer (due to stretched tape, etc.), feel free to send along a .wav for the patch dumps and I can try to recover the data and provide back a clean SYX version of it.

Hello Chris - let me see if mine works first - last time I think I tried it it wasn't interfacing properly. In what manner do your decks not work - i.e. do they not power up at all, or do the tape(s) not work being read by the Chroma? I seem to remember disengaging the cassette motor operation for troubleshooting but ... wow that was long ago.

As I was looking through a folder of old Chroma docs to scan and pass along stuff to Chris Ryan, I noticed that I had penciled in something about having to re-EQ the Chroma Cult cassette tape, on the high frequencies, in order to make it work.

Glad that it's all in sys-ex now.

I have a cassette interface cable that is still in the package unopened. Is anyone interested in it?

Very cool. Do you think the same technique could be modified for other synth tape dumps? I have some Voyetra-8 dumps that don't load I'd like to recover/convert to sysex.

Chris Borman [21030194+]

Just load the tape data in and read it back out via MIDI! I use SoundQuest MidiQuest. It has editors for just about any synthesizer including the Chroma. I have downloaded Chroma program .wav files from the website and loaded them into my Chroma using my PC's audio output.

Doug Terrebonne [21030114]

The tape dumps don't load, that's the problem.

David Clarke [21030085++]

... Do you think the same technique could be modified for other synth tape dumps?...

Yes, absolutely.

I originally wrote the utilities to decode/extract data from a Prophet-5, and later used that as the starting point to decode the Polaris and Chroma.

For most interfaces, it's just a matter of reviewing the data and counting the number of samples between zero crossings. Most implementations use one frequency for a '1', and another frequency for a '0'.

Once you know what should nominally be a '0' or a '1', you can expand the range to help accommodate hiccups or low spots.

The more you know about the data structure the easier it is to then decode the data stream of 0's and 1's.

Even better is if you have a tape dump of a known set of patch data - or even better, a tape dump and a SYSEX dump of the same data.

Idea: Ribbon Controller For Chroma

Marais

Would anyone ever be interested in designing something like this for the Chroma? It would be wonderful to have one.

Anyone have a Kurzweil Expressionmate and tried it with the Chroma?

Chris Borman [21030194+]

Ribbon controllers are easy. The Kurzweil unit is three discrete segments. Not sure what they add to it with the controller, but a controller is what can make such a device interesting.

I have a dual Pitch/Mod ribbon concept in the works with some smarts that could be used in place of the Chroma Levers. A Kurzweil type ribbon device would require integration with the CC+ to be really functional.

I almost got a CC+... :(

fully complete w/ the pressure sensor; installation notes

RJ Krohn [21030455]

so about 18 months or so after purchase, my chroma is finally fully rebuilt WITH the pressure sensor upgrade. first time i actually put the screws back in the case this morning! whew. sure is fun. thanks to all on here who helped along the way, and Chris [21030194+] for doing the pressure kits.

a few notes on pressure installation: the "middle C" alignment, as noted here, should actually be around B. in fact, in hindsight, lining it up with the exact width of the keybed and THEN marking them off would probably be the most accurate. after installing, i had to re-drill holes in the wood support and the metal braces for it to calibrate properly; still was only about a 2 hr job or so.

also, i removed the green round felts underneath the keys, and MUCH prefer the action. it makes the aftertouch sensitivity much closer to that of a T8 (probably my favorite action of all time). it's really nice.

good luck fellow pressure kit-ers....

Chris Borman [21030194+]

That middle c again... an idea with good intentions, but failed results. The sensor array is made up using two identical 32 key sensor boards. One is built up and installed flipped over. The circuitry is mirrored on the flip side. The wood backing added for structural support fully covers that proper middle c silkscreen on the right or upper sensor so what you see is the silkcsreen on the bottom of the flipped or left sensor which lands the arrow right on the b key... Doh!

The reason for this was the PCB mfg specs said they could make up to a 36" board so I laid out and routed a one piece 64 key sensor. Turns out 18" was the limit, so instead of paying NRE twice, I cut, mirrored and pasted the right circuit half onto the bottom, then cut the PCB down to size. Both top and bottom sensors are wired to the same connector pins. One board for either side.

Anyway, I finally got around to updating the online doc to reflect the current rev 2 h/w including proper installation instructions.

You should see that posted soon.

RJ Krohn [21030455]

yea-all good, though. nothing is permanently out of whack if you follow the old instructions. basically if you re-size and drill 4 holes, shift the right side metal attachement about 1/2" to the left, you are good to go, pretty much.

Odysséas Tsakas-Grigoriadis [21010242]

Hello Chris,

Talking about CPS kits, are these yours the ones on ebay? Item number is 110698797120, and seller name is zawinulsounds

Enrico Dibennardo [21030494]

Does it mean they are ready to ship? Why it hasn't been announced for those who are waiting? I think everyone paid the whole amount anticipately

Odysséas Tsakas-Grigoriadis [21010242]

Enrico, If you are reffering to the CPS kits on ebay, I don't think Chris is the one who's selling them. Rather some guy who happens to possess (?) many CPS kits. The question is how, and when did he aquired these kits.

Chris Borman [21030194+]

All the CPS kits from the last build are complete. I shipped 7 kits last week and the remaining 4 will go this week which includes your Kit Enrico.

The Ebay Kits? - I was just in the process of having more FSRs produced for a similar project I am working on when this CPS build #5 was initiated and was able to tack the FSRs required onto that existing order. I always order extra parts for attrition, so from the 5 prior builds and bumping up this PCB order, I have aquired sufficient parts to build a few more complete Kits. Those are what you see on Ebay.

Seems the CPS market has dried up here in RhodesChroma.com land, so I am going to give Ebay a shot to unload my remaining inventory. If anyone else has interest here, just send me an email and I will honor the original price I had listed on the website [eBay price is USD$385.00].

*Attached is what I came with for my Sequential Circuits Pro One. Just a monophonic version but still cool! The Pro One has great modulation control capability for a fixed synth. I am going to insert key pressure in there somewhere, maybe serially into the Mod wheel circuit or just route it back to the Ext Filter Mod input. Still need to make up a I-V conversion and amp board for it to work...

Enrico Dibennardo [21030494]

Hello, today I sent a message to the group that seemed to express some criticism towards Chris Borman, afterwards I sent two very kind messages and compliments to Chris... well, the first message passed through immediately while the other two disappeared in a black hole. I just wanted to say I'm not really as unkind as I might probably appear today :-) Enrico

P.S. di other people experience the same problem with this messageboard?

Chris Borman [21030194+]

Re: cps

I didn't feel any criticism as much as I felt Enrico's compliment. Not an unkind guy at all! I had a similar problem with facebook today. Commented, saw the comment posted. Later refreshed and comment was gone..

Who here is on Facebook? I am. look me up!

Work on my Chroma

Heinz Weierhorst [21010276]

Hi all.

Here some pictures from my Chroma just before finishing. As you can see I've done a lot of work: A precision powersupply, a new CMB-Board, a new EQ-Board and a revised Rear-Panel. That takes over three years but with a lot of brakes.

Chris Borman [21030194+]

Working on a Chroma is just about as fun as playing it!

Luca Sasdelli [21010226]

Ciao Heinz,

what about that EQ-2 board?

Heinz Weierhorst [21010276]

Hi Luca.

I've sent all information about that to Chris Ryan to show it on the site. But if you want further information please let me know and I will mail it to you.

Ron Joseph [21030042+]

HW, if you could give us an overview of the EQ board I'd think the entire list would be interested. Is it a rebuild of the old board or has added functionality been added ?

Heinz Weierhorst [21010276]

Hi Ron.

The new EQ-Board is different from the old one. First the two nearly obsolete CEM3360 VCAs were replaced by the more modern SSM2164 quad VCA. Second all outputs now are balanced including the Mono-Outputs. Third all integrated circuits are placed on the bottom of the PCB in high qualiliy sockets to allow the user to test different opamps without removing the EQ-Board. At least there is a plug for a headphone-amp, thank Luca for his hint. For those who are in trouble with a wrong CEM3360 on EQ I've created a little PCB to replace them.

Jeffrey D. McEachin

EQ Board

I'd love to buy two for my Chromas, just to reclaim the CEM3360s for use on other synths. The quieter outputs are just an added bonus. :)

Any plans to offer it for sale? If not, could you post a pcb layout?

Ron Joseph [21030042+]

Re: EQ Board

I'd be interested in two as well if they were put up for sale....maybe it would be feasable?

Chris Ryan [21030691]

Re: EQ Board

Any plans to offer it for sale? If not, could you post a pcb layout?

I will get this info onto the site for the July update.

For sale original CPU board

Odysséas Tsakas-Grigoriadis [21010242]

Hello list,

I would like to sell the original CPU board from my Chroma (which worked great until I replaced it with the CC+, which by the way is great!) and maybe a couple of voice boards which do not work. I believe that the voice boards are easily fixable (everything is of course present on them), but I don't have the knowledge, equipment or tech to help me do so. As for the prices, I have no idea so I would like to hear back from people interested (if any) and we will conclude at the moment.

All of this, as I need extra cash to purchase a Yamaha DX5.

Luca Sasdelli [21010226]

Hi Ody,

just today I've put my old CPU in eBay, with starting price of Euro 50,00. The AA-size batteries and their battery holder have been removed and replaced with a NiCd battery and its subtle current charging circuit on same board.

The last CPU on eBay was sold at US$229.00... I don't hope that much, but anyway I guess something around 100-120 Euros would make me happy.

About the voice boards, at present every item could be replaced except for the CEM3350 VCF and perhaps the tempco resistors.

Working DVBs are quoted between US$83.00 and US$220.00: see the Price History.

For your two faulty DVBs I can offer Euro 100.00 (together). This is a simple first offer, so if anybody on this list is interested in them, please have his proposal: my isn't an exclusive offer at all.

When you'll feel satisfied with offerings, please let us know:)

Odysséas Tsakas-Grigoriadis [21010242]

Hi Lucas,

Thank you for all these informations and the DVBs offer.

My old CPU is still with the original battery holder. I will see if anybody else manifest interest, or else I'll just put it on the bay and send you the voice boards.

By the way, as I haven't reached an agreement yet with my buyer, if anyone has a DX5 for sale, let me know.

Luca Sasdelli [21010226]

Hi all,

Chris Ryan just told me the CPU isn't visible on eBay. Here the link: [eBay Italy item #130532416148]

Chris Ryan [21030691]

It was just that it wasn't visible on eBay Canada/U.S. Thanks.

Luca Sasdelli [21010226]

Just in case, here attached the image: on eBay doesn't show in full size as it should be.

Hi list,

Programming and Service Manuals on eBay

Chris Ryan [21030691]

Item #200620070081, starting bid USD$0.99 and no bids yet (reserve not met), ends June 21. Description: "These are Genuine Rhodes Chroma Service manual (full schematics) and Programming manuals. I have had these kicking around on a shelf for years and here they are for anyone that wants or needs them." Service Manual looks original, while the Programming Manual appears to be a photocopy.

Failed to sell at a reserve of USD$100; now re-listed as item #200622830496 with a $75 reserve price.

Paul DeRocco [21030230]

Looks like it's turning into a Dutch auction. Maybe in a week it'll be re-listed at $50. I wonder what it'll go for. (I don't want it, I've already got one.)

Chris, just a note, if you count mine there's at least 5 halloween Chromas. I have one more set of Halloween panels that I'll probably use the membrane for the Gold set of panels.
